Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. – Acheron Parthenopaeus
Just because you want something doesn’t mean that it is good for you. Just because you can make a particular choice doesn’t necessarily make it the right choice for you. And just because you have freedoms doesn’t mean you should use those freedoms to abuse yourself or others. What a concept! It sounds like Parenting 101 to me…. Yet we’re adults, and we are the ones who make particularly bad choices on a daily basis. Some of the bad choices we make are simple ones: skipping out on an “important” meeting, eating Andes mints for breakfast, or hitting the snooze button one time too many. Other choices are more impactful and can lead us down the road to disaster – such as addictions, bad relationships, and broken families. But what it really comes down to in the end is a simple choice that turns into a series of choices that can be devastating.
The point is that God gives us complete freedom to make choices for ourselves; while He can direct us, advice us, point us in the right direction all He wants, ultimately, the responsibility for the direction we choose is ours alone. So the next time we question, “How could God allow this to happen to me?” maybe we should remember the last time our child asked us, “Why are you so mean?” The answer is simple: we have to own up to the consequences of our actions no matter how old we are.
And while I am practically perfect (snicker, snicker, snort, snort, Oh my gosh I nearly shot a snotrocket over that one), the fact of the matter is that in reality, I am nothing short of imperfect in every way. I am human, I am fallible, and I fail every single day. But the great news? The most fantastic, awesomest, most phenomenal celebrational news EVER is that I have a loving Father who accepts me no matter how lame I am, no matter how imperfect I am, and no matter how dark and ugly my heart can become. He welcomes me with the most pure and unconditional love that could ever be bestowed on a human creature. And do you know what? He welcomes you in the very same way. Romans 10:9 explains that if you “Confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” And, my dear friend, there is absolutely no other choice that you can make in this world that will be more life-changing than this.
Confess…Believe…Change.
