I Wanna Be Rich

I want. I want. I want. I want! I WANT!!! Doesn’t it seem as though at different times in life this seems to be our mantra? We want-a-this and we-want-a-that…. But when is enough simply enough?

In a day and age where everything we could possibly imagine is at our fingertips, I believe most of us do not have a ready answer for that question.  Every day, we are bombarded with commercials, advertisements, and billboards telling us what we need, what we “have to have” to make our lives less complicated, more efficient, and totally fulfilling.  And we completely buy into it on some level, whether we believe it or not; if we are careful not to fall into those marketing strategies, we have friends, neighbors, and children who will remind us that we do want the things that “everyone else” has.  We jump headfirst into the never-ending cycle of keeping up with the Jonses, and it literally makes us miserable because we can’t monetarily afford it.  And if we don’t have the liquid cash, guess what?  They have credit for that!  The pressing question, then, is where do we draw the line?  Unfortunately, most of us never do.

The only answer is to change your perspective.  Change the way you look at money and things.  Change the way you look at the world around you and start to appreciate what you have rather than everything you don’t have.  In Phillipians 4:11-12, Paul, from prison, writes to encourage his brothers in Phillippi: “I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.  I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.”  I believe this is the key: contentment.  Now can everyone be perfectly content all the time? No, of course not!  But with a little effort, a lot of faith and simple gratitude, we can slowly, but surely, begin to rejoice in all of the wonderful people, experiences, and even things that God has blessed us with.
