Duty Calls: An American Soldier

The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing. ~ Albert Einstein

Duty calls.  What does that actually mean? To me, my “duty” is my responsibility, and definitely not something to be taken lightly.  I have certain obligations by agreement; I agree that I will do my job to the best of my ability, and that is my duty to my company, my boss, and to my clientele.  I agree that I will be the best parent I can possibly be; that is my duty to my child.  I agree that I will be morally upright and ethical; that is my duty to myself and God.  Those are a few of the responsibilities I have chosen; I work on these every day because I feel obligated to make these issues a priority in my life.  I believe many of us prioritize these very same things, and it becomes a tie that binds us to each other.

However, there is a unique group of people who have a higher calling, and a far more profound sense of duty than we can truly comprehend.  We hear about them very day, but I have to wonder if we have ever really stopped to consider them and the enormous duty they have taken upon themselves.  I am talking about those men and women who have agreed to put their personal lives on hold and their physical lives on the line to protect us in ways that we cannot comprehend.  We see them represented in movies, we read about them in articles, and we watch them on the news.  But have we ever really put ourselves in their shoes? I am referring to a group of heroes and heroines that includes soldiers, undercover law enforcement officers, and any other group that chooses to leave a life filled with love and abundance to make a stand for those who cannot stand up for themselves.

Imagine, if you will, kissing your children good-bye, not knowing when or even if your will get to see them again in this life.  Imagine willingly leaving your nice suburban home, your warm bed, your nice green grass and your basic human rights and freedoms to go to a place where you are despised; where they would rather slit your throat than shake your hand, where there are no beds, no comforts of home, no hope of any regular communication with someone who loves you, and literally no gratitude for the job you are doing.  Yet you choose to do it anyway, because you know that you are improving the lives of the nameless, faceless many; you do it because you know that ultimately, you are protecting your reality and the future of your children.  You know that if you do nothing, someday it could be YOUR children being forced into slavery, YOUR home that could be taken from you, and YOUR way of life that could be destroyed.  And if you think that these things are only occurring across the ocean, it is time to really look at what is going on in America today, where Phoenix, Arizona is the kidnapping capital of America (and second in the world) due to human trafficking.  Our America is only protected because there is an elite group that chooses this life as their duty, their responsibility, their obligation.  And I for one thank God that there are those special people who have followed that higher calling.

My favorite Bible verse is this: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men” (Colossians 3:23).  I believe that the work these brave men and women do encompasses this verse completely; there is no other explanation for the extraordinary way they complete their duty every day, other than it is a higher calling that allows them to be extraordinarily brave and strong in situations that would have the rest of us running the opposite direction.  I for one would like to commend each of those individuals who willing to stand in the gap for me, for my children, for my way of life.

No words can express my complete and utter gratitude, but humbly and completely I thank you.

From the bottom of my heart.

Catch you on the flip side,

Ang
