“This is what change looks like.” ~ Barack Obama
Change. Webster’s Dictionary defines change as: To cause to be different; to transform; to lay aside, abandon, or leave for another. In other words, changing means to be different. And different is good, right? Well, it can be.
Now I am not a political gal by any means, and I don’t plan on this being a political discussion, so if you’re looking for fireworks and some profound insight into the Health Care Reform Bill, well, you’re not going to get it here. It really doesn’t matter what side of the debate you fall on; it is what it is, and the law will be the law whether you politely agree or vocally challenge it.
What I want to know is when did we as a people begin to put more faith in the words of a man than the music of our hearts? When did we decide to deify a person because they had new ideas, challenged the status quo, or proclaimed to hold the corner on the market of what “change looks like”? I believe that we all have a responsibility to ourselves to use our instincts, our judgment, and our God-given ability to question the nature of things to come to an accurate determination of what change is, rather than depending on a person, an organization, or even a political system to determine it for us.
As a child of God, I should be a living instrument of change, shouldn’t I? I should not be the same individual today as I was even a year ago; I should be closer to becoming the person God wants me to be. Who does He want me to be? I don’t know; but I do know that my change, my metamorphosis will be unique to me, just as your process of change should be unique to you. And that change process is between you and Jesus, “the author and perfecter of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2); He will guide you if you allow Him. The only decision you have to make is to change your perspective – change your way of thinking! We are reminded of this in Romans 12:2, “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…” In other words, continually learn, continually grow, and you will slowly but surely become that you that God desires for you to be.
And that, my friend, really is what change looks like!
Catch you on the flip side!
