Every tomorrow has two handles. We can take hold of it with the handle of anxiety or the handle of faith. ~ Henry Ward Beecher
Worry, worry, worry! It seems like every day, there is another issues that has us struggling to make sense of our lives. We tend to start this circular type of thinking very early in life, and we learn it from watching and listening to the very same type of stress in those around us. Mom worried because you didn’t start to talk at the appropriate age. Dad worried because you seemed to like ballet more than baseball. Sister worried because you got more attention than she did. Brother worried because your appetite was getting bigger as you got older, and that might mean less food for him. And it was no wonder, with all that worrying that went on around you that soon, you began to worry, too.
At first, it was small things like worrying whether or not someone was going to try and eat the hidden stash of gummy bears that is in your sock. Then it grew to worrying about whether or not you were going to make the basketball team. Soon enough, you were worrying about whether or not anyone was ever going to fall in love with you. And then you worried about whether or not they were going to love you forever. And essentially, what did all that worry bring you but an ulcer and some stock in the company that makes Pepcid AC??? Nada. Zero. Zilch. The big ZIP.
I love Mr. Beecher’s quote; it is so simple, yet profound. We have choices, and while all situations are not as simple as the ones listed above, the fact is that while we have issues that may cause us stress, ultimately we have no control over most of the things that occur in normal day to day life. But the one things we CAN do – the one things we SHOULD do – is the one thing we sometimes FORGET to do until we are at our wit’s end…..PRAY! Four little letters that can have such an enormous impact, yet we drive ourselves crazy before we actually turn to the only One who CAN do something – GOD!!!!1 Phillipians 4: 6-7 tells us, “Do not be anxious about ANYTHING, but in EVERYTHING, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God…” and the best part is that if we follow that one simple command from His word, then… “The peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” While He does not promise us that everything will always be okay or work out the way we want it to, he does tell us that He can give us the very core of what we are looking for – PEACE – if only we will let Him.
